Christmas in Ghana, as well as New Year’s Eve, is filled with joy, events and celebrations. If you’re not travelling during these festive dates, we want to share a list activities that we think are worth attending. Take a look at the best Christmas events & festivals taking place in Ghana.

Why is Ghana so popular in December?

Before we get into introducing some of the parties happening this December 2023, have you ever asked yourself why is Ghana so popular in December?

Do you remember or have you heard about the Year of Return? This event in 2019 was the grandest event that Ghana ever held in December, thanks to events such as Afro Nation, and managed to bring in foreigners to Ghana to place Ghana more firmly on the global map as a key destination spot.

Christmas celebrations in Ghana

Ankos Masquerade in Takoradi

Arguably the best place to spend Christmas in Ghana is Sekondi-Takoradi. The capital of Western Region attracts millions of people across the world to witness the best showcase of masquerade groups.

Also known as Takoradi street carnival or Masquerade Festival, is an annual event which takes place between 25th December and 2nd of January. Teams come together, dressing up in wild outfits, to display their skills, culture and other arts, on the streets of Takoradi. Using a brass band, they spend the day dancing and singing.

The beautiful part about this free event is that both young and old people are involved, colourful and funny outfits, with a very festive and happy environment around you. Definitely need to experience this event at least once.
