Gallery 1957 was launched in 2016 by Marwan Zakhem on Ghana Independence Day.
Since its opening, it has expanded into three gallery spaces, one located at the Kempinski Hotel, another in the Galleria Mall and finally an outpost in London’s Hyde Park Gate. Its programme is dedicated to spearheading international exchanges between contemporary West African art practices and the rest of the world. It’s one of the most reputable art galleries in Accra.
In 2021, Gallery 1957 launched the Yaa Asantewaa Art Prize, the first ever dedicated art prize for women artists living and working in Africa.
It aims to further strengthen their commitment to supporting and promoting emerging and established artists across Ghana and the diaspora.
